FIRST Washington engages students ages 5-18 in exciting mentor-based programs that build STEM skills, inspire innovation, and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. We serve over 15,000 youth and are the LARGEST STEM after-school program in Washington!
In the unique age of COVID-19, FIRST has had to retrofit its traditional in-person afterschool programming. Across the spectrum of our programming (FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Challenge) we offered virtual mini-challenges for teams to work on monthly in a Zoom or safe social-distancing format. Teams can then upload videos of their robots or projects completing the tasks. Help support us as we continue to operate and offer quality STEM content to our students across the state and support teams as they transition back to in-school learning!
Students who participate in FIRST are three times more likely than comparison students to show an interest in STEM careers and to declare a major in Engineering and Sciences. Female students who participate in FIRST are five times more likely to declare a major in Engineering and Sciences. 60% of FIRST alumni are currently employed in STEM fields.
